1. A Bad Joke

Stories never line up perfectly. When I said I was going to Kupang, everyone around me gave a peculiar smile. "To work?" In Korea, working at a company named 'Coupang'—resembling a Korean version of Amazon—is known as moving goods under conditions where having a healthy body alone isn't enough to call it good. News of people dying from heatstrokes or overwork pops up occasionally, and confessions of people fleeing because they couldn't endure even half a day are overflowing. Meanwhile, Juan Salt Pan, the starting point of this project, made me think of it as if it were a Latin-sounding name pronounced 'Juan', rather than the pure Korean name read as 'Joo-An' during my research in Korea. Later, when I arrived in Kupang, I found there was a St. Juan Monastery, and also Juan was a common name, there. There was absolutely no connection.

I have never actually seen the Juan Salt Pan in Incheon. The salt pan that started in Juan in 1907 spread to neighboring areas, reaching about 1,000 hectares, and this region gradually transformed into an industrial complex starting in the 1960s. The Juan I saw was a place where coal was piled high, and there were many factories handling iron here and there. I vividly remember the harshness of life in Incheon during the '80s. I believe the extraction of human and material resources from this neighborhood, which began during the colonial era, fattened life in Seoul rather than making this neighborhood prosperous. The industrial salt pan under construction in Kupang is estimated to be over 1,500 hectares, exceeding the total size of all the salt pans that used to be in Incheon. Due to issues with the berthing facilities, the salt extraction seemed to have ground to a halt, and local villagers had come out to catch fish in the salt pan waterways. They say it takes over two hours by land to connect with Lifuleo, a candidate site for an adjacent industrial complex; it needs to be connected by sea, but whether that will happen anytime soon or if it will remain halted as it is remains to be seen. The industrial complex currently has only one thermal power plant and no other facilities. When we visited, local youths were betting on motorcycle races on the well-paved road.

Daniel told us that people from East Timor are coming to Bali to engage in manual labor. They say the young people have left for other regions in search of better jobs, but if the salt pans and factories are established, will they return? If that happens, will Kupang become as prosperous as Java?

2. Time

The industrial salt pans in Incheon that existed and then disappeared. The industrial salt pans currently being created in Kupang. Incheon’s salt pans are a matter of the past, while Kupang’s salt pans are in the present progressive. Incheon’s present is Kupang’s past.

What will happen in Kupang in the future is that once the industrial salt pan construction is complete, the produced salt will be used as raw material for the chemical industry, and the construction of an industrial complex may take place in the coastal area. It might become like the appearance of Incheon’s industrial complexes in the future. Incheon’s present is the future scenery for Kupang.

Concept
Reminiscence of Salt Pan: Locus sacer no.2 is a site-specific video work exploring the "temporal entanglement" between historical industrial centers and emerging peripheral zones across Asia. The project contrasts the erased memory of Juan Salt Pan in Incheon, South Korea—once a vital industrial salt production site, now superseded by industrial complexes and urban expansion—with the newly emerging, large-scale industrial salt pans being constructed in Kupang, West Timor, Indonesia.
From the vantage point of industrialized metropolitan centers, contemporary South Korea may appear as the projected future of Kupang's development. However, viewed through the lifecycle of salt as an elemental resource, South Korea represents a closed past whose production base has vanished, while 2026 Kupang functions as the active present and immediate future. Positioned along this twisted temporal axis, the work employs two hooded, anonymous "time-travelers" navigating disorienting landscapes to expose the continuous cycle of resource extraction, logistical tension, and the structural fate of peripheries modified to sustain distant centers.
Curatorial Intent
In the history of Asian modernization, capital accumulation and urban development have consistently relied on an extractivist dynamic that pulls raw materials and labor from peripheral territories toward economic centers. This project critiques the uneven geopolitical relationships embedded in resource supply chains and unpacks the non-linear, asynchronous temporalities obscured by dominant narratives of progress. By superimposing the disappeared industrial past of one region onto the emergent industrial landscape of another, the work questions the shared environmental, spatial, and economic costs underpinning Asian development. Through the performative gaze of displaced travelers, it invites viewers to reconsider established linear timelines and confront the tangible remnants of Asian industrial geography.
Content and Narrative Structure
The narrative centers on two artists who navigate contrasting environments as anonymous figures with obscured faces, holding hands as an act of mutual reliance. Together, they traverse ambiguous, disrupted terrains: expansive, muddy salt fields under construction, raw coastlines, hyper-dense industrial districts, vacant commercial malls, and surreal recreational grounds.
The visual flow alternates between aerial drone perspectives capturing the geometric grids of industrial zones and intimate ground-level tracking shots documenting the physical resistance of unpaved mud tracks, tidal flats, and the subtle friction of local surveillance. By juxtaposing the stillness of peripheral production sites with the remnants of hyper-dense urban centers, the narrative evokes a sense of spatial disorientation and temporal displacement, functioning as an allegory for the disorientation experienced within modern global production networks.

Methodology and Artistic Practice
  • Performative Walking as Time-Travel: Utilizing bodily movement and specific personas (covered faces and synchronized walking) to physically register spatial tension, disorientation, and historical layers across disparate geographical sites.
  • Non-linear Cross-cutting Montage: Juxtaposing Juan and Kupang, ground-level textures and macroscopic drone views, and natural coastlines and artificial facilities to deconstruct linear historical paradigms.
  • Geopolitical Research and Archival Synthesis: Grounding the visual narrative in on-site field investigations of industrial development, logistics routes, and the realities of raw material production in Asia.
